Maverick is a registered quarter horse born in 2000. Maverick has been with us since he was 3 and has done everything from barrel racing and pole bending, to western showmanship, as well as showing off in parades. Maverick has traveled more than any other horse in the herd and his last experience was a two week riding trip in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas with MTR’s owner, Ed.
Jack, as we call him, is a 1200 lb gelding who at times behaves just like one of our dogs. He loves playing in the water, and following people in search of attention. Jack has been a part of the family herd going on 5 years. During that time he has established himself as the “top dog,” providing leadership to the herd.
Leno is a 7 year old quarter horse gelding who always has a jig in his step. Many folks enjoy riding him because of the energy and excitement he has while out on the trails. When Leno is not out riding, he prefers to spend his time in the paddock following whichever mare has most recently caught his eye.
Pongo is a 12 year old Appaloosa gelding and serves as a guide for MTR as well. Pongo joined the herd in the summer of ‘13, and was named due to his remarkable resemblance to Pongo from 101 Dalmations. He has proven himself to be of great use in team penning and moving cattle. Presumably born out West, based on his brandings, he has been trained to work cattle and shows an instinct for it.
Penny is a 10 year old quarter horse mare who joined the herd in the spring of '14. She was rescued from poor living conditions and after months of proper feed and care she transformed into a happy and healthy horse. Her personality is one that is in no hurry. She is perfectly fine being at the back of the pack, occasionally picking up a relaxed jog to catch up.
Slick is a registered 12 year old Baskir Curly Horse, an unusual breed whose coat is hypoallergenic. Slick is a gaited horse with a quick pace, making for a smooth and speedy ride for his passengers.
Esmerelda joined the herd in the summer of '14 and is the oldest mare in the herd, around 17 years old. She is small and sweet, making her a favorite with the kids. She is most comfortable with her young riders and her favorite duty is the handheld rides where she can leisurely walk around the arena without the young horses pestering her.
